I think everyone agrees that one should always strive for improvements. People go through all sorts of trouble to improve themselves. Sometimes these improvements are about getting better financial situations, changing job or other types of improvement which add more value to one’s life. The question is how far one should go to make improvements?
There are lots of activities which are included in this wide area, such as exercise, eating right, the economic improvement which some people consider as self-improvement and so on.
I don’t want to talk about all of them. My focus here is about self-improvement spiritually versus physical look.
In today’s society, self-improvement has got a new meaning. People do all sort of things to make improvements. It is like no one like him/herself when looking in the mirror anymore. I heard once that a speaker actually said: “When you look at yourself in the mirror and you don’t like what you see, it is time to make a change. Well, this sentence may be accurate when it is a question about overweight but doesn’t cover all the cases.
In today’s society, somehow it has become ok for an 18 years old girl to go through plastic surgery to make her breast bigger. There are some who don’t like their noses anymore and want to change it. other wishes to be longer or shorter. Things have got so bad that people are operating “private parts” to make them look more appealing.
my question is: what really happened to society? When all this became ok. I have seen people who are even more extreme. some people operate their apprentice to look like a certain actor or actress.
When it is not a question about plastic surgery, it is about the perfect shape of the body. People activate themselves in different sports activity for endless hours to get a perfect stomach or some other part of the body.
Body shaming of the people who don’t have a perfect body has become more common in school and other parts of society. Calling someone fat although most of the people believe that it is not politically correct, seems to be very funny in lots of situation. (Being politically correct, is another discussion i.e. when to follow and when to ignore).
Are all of the above, the values we have to develop and accept to have a better society?
Let me introduce to you a small thought.
I claim that almost anything you introduce to society if the introduction is gradual enough and if enough advertisement has been introduced for the issue will result that society will eventually accept it as norm.
You don’t believe me? take any norm or value which some years ago was not accepted as a good thing and nowadays everyone accepts it, and many applies it in their life. Do a little research and you will find how gradually the issue was introduced.
Look, I don’t want to present myself as saint or moral police, after all, there are no absolute moral values. All I am saying, not a lot of people notice these things.
You may ask, why is that? The answer is that the polarity of society dictates what the majority of people will do or not do. In today’s society, thinking has “become forbidden” and by that, I don’t mean that it has literary become forbidden. Everyone wishes to be accepted in society. When you think different or act differently you are not part of the majority anymore. If you don’t speak in a way which is politically correct, you will be shamed. Of course, no one wants that. The result is when a wrong value is introduced no one speaks. we just accept them not to be shamed by others.
For example, it is more acceptable in society, to be more developed and perfect physically than spiritually.
I know, I know, I sound very boring but believe me, there was a time, I didn’t believe in all of these mumbo jumbos either but then I started thinking, I was not pleased of what I “really” saw.
The bottom line is, having a healthy body is good for spirt, but that alone will not cover you. It is essential to invest i
